It would be pretty presumptuous of me to claim to have summed up all the causes of online failure. But there are a couple major causes of failure I see over and over again. Avoid these:
Failure to Plan
All to often, people dive head first into something without thoroughly developing a strategy. Don’t make a huge mistake and chase an idea without first doing your homework. You should be researching the marketing, listing out your initial steps and goals, identifying potential pitfalls and obstacles and preparing to implement proven successful strategies.
On a basic level, this includes things such as keyword research, reading of other blogs and message boards and checking out the competition to help you determine exactly what kind of business to create.
Making Goals Too Big Early On
I’m not saying you shouldn’t shoot for the stars, but make what you strive for is realistic. If your goal is to make $10,000 in the first month, you are going to come up short. The problem with failing to reach some goals is that it can frustrate you and chip away at your motivation. No one is saying you should settle for mediocre intentions. Just make sure they are reasonable.
Lack of Knowledge of Knowledge Overload
Chances are you are currently on one side of this spectrum — you either don’t know enough or you have too many things going on in your head. This tends to be a cause-and-effect relationship. You probably wanted to learn more about websites and internet marketing, so maybe you bought a book on it. You might have Googled around a couple of articles, talked to a friend and bought into a few programs. Afterwards, you had so much input that you lost track of where your focus should be.
Not Investing in Your Business
Better results often come from better tools. And these tools can cost money. You can get some good insight from free keyword research sites but can get even more useful information from paid versions. Sometimes paying for a freelance worker to write copy or create a logo can free up your time to do whatever it is you do best.
Failing to Actively Promote
Actually putting up a website or blog is half the battle. “If I build it, they will come” is a bad mantra. You need to spend just as much time, if not more, actively promoting your website. This will ultimately help you rise above the 90% of the online world who avoid the promotion side of things.
